Fri Jun 23: What are human rights anyway?

The formalization of "rights" becomes tendentiously misleading - especially the notion that there should be anything universal about them. But here comes the foundation of every liberal's nocturnal emission.. "The Universal Declaration of Human Rights". The real question being, does it make any kind of sense?

The mistreatment of Jewish people in Nazi Germany around World War II is what supposedly inspired the creation of it. What happened during the Holocaust however, was simply the result of targeting of a large group of people.. and not individuals per se. Instead of attempting to make a case about this, the Declaration on the other hand deals exclusively with the rights of the individual human being without even once mentioning collectivities.

Claiming that any randomly decided upon "human rights" are universal inevitably results to us ignoring, as well as undermining the cultural differences that exist between societies in different parts of the world. What is seen as a basic right in the eyes of a specific society might directly clash with commonplace values, customs and practices in another. Not everything revolves around the West and the West's values, nor should it.

Instead of pseudo-moralistically obsessing with changing or unifying the world, such utopian efforts (if at all genuine) should probably be reserved for local problems people in your community, neighbourhood and/or country are currently facing. Crying about the criminalisation of gays sodomizing each other in Uganda is probably far less productive than paying attention to atroccities that are actually taking place right under your nose. Only if the Western world's empathy extended farther than charities for Africans, but alas.

the Woman in the Red Dress

On analyzing this particular scene in The Matrix, it becomes clear that the woman in red is a deliberate distraction, a simulated character who is a part of the Agent training program. While the woman appears harmless, she wears a vibrant shade of red in order to distract trainees, triggering what's known as the "red dress effect" - a phenomenon where women wearing red are perceived to be more attractive and open to sexual advances than those in plain colors. This doesn't just apply to form-fitting dresses; the "red dress effect" has been shown to work even in a study where subjects were shown a photo of a woman wearing a white T-shirt and a red T-shirt in the same style.

There's more to the woman in the red dress than just being eye candy for Neo, though. The stark contrast between the monochrome attire of the pedestrians and the woman in red in The Matrix serves to highlight the gap between appearance and reality. The moment she senses a threat to the matrix, she is overwritten by an armed and dangerous agent, underlining the themes of illusion and control within the framework of the system. Her character also alludes to the Scarlet Woman or the Whore of Babylon, references lifted directly from the Book of Revelations, and the mythic lore of the goddess Babalon in Thelema.
